Physical contaminants

These are loose dirt and dust particles caused by soil erosion and sedimentation. When ingested, these contaminants may cause nausea or irritation in the intestines.

Chemical contaminants

The origin of these contaminants can be natural or manmade. These include metals, pesticides, toxins produced by bacteria or human and animal drugs. When ingested, these contaminants may cause kidney disease, abdominal pain or skin discolouration.

Biological contaminants

Caused by organisms in water, biological contaminants include viruses, bacteria, protozoa and parasites. When ingested, these contaminants may cause diarrhoea, viral fever, pneumonia or cholera.

New-age contaminants

These emerging contaminants of the modern world include heavy metals like mercury, cadmium, arsenic, chromium and lead; personal care products like cosmetics, shampoos and hair dyes; microplastics from the trash in our water bodies; as well as other contaminants like tea waste, soft drinks, energy drinks etc.
